People elsewhere hear the name "Santa Fe, New Mexico", and assume that it is either a desert or a tropical place. It's neither. This mountain town is actually a savannah, a fact which was told to me by the New Mexico state archaeologist, Thomas J. Caperton. Our winters are snowy, and cold weather can last from November through April. Summers are warm, but not unpleasant, since it cools down considerably in the evenings and night-time. And it does rain here, some years more than others. The reason that we don't have enough water involves the lack of reservoirs and good planning.

...go here for the new on-line version of the Santa Fe New Mexican newspaper. Sure, their only editorial policy is that you be left-wing and a functional illiterate to write there, but it's all we have. The Santa Fe New Mexican puts puff-pieces about puppies and their owners on its front page regularly, and omits any reportage about our wonderful heroic young people in the nation's service. I guess they expect all citizens of Santa Fe--the ones who can afford it--to subscribe to the New York Times for their news. Locals don't deserve coverage anyway, unless they have four legs and bark.

Santa Fe Hispanic Culture: Preserving Identity in a Tourist Town, by Andrew Leo Lovato (professor and my guitar teacher) "Andrew Leo Lovato, 160 pages, hardcover $24.95. University of New Mexico Press, 2004. As author Andrew Leo Lovato writes, Santa Fe is not only a 'city of ancient traditions' but one of 'invented traditions' — in other words, it’s a true tourist town. 'It is deeply influenced by its cultural roots,' he writes, 'while at the same time willing to reshape and commodify its cultural symbols for sale to the highest bidder.' A native Santa Fean himself, Lovato looks at the city’s history — and its future. "~~The High Country News, 2004

From The New York Times, September 4th, 2007, comes a rather badly written article on a disease inherent in some native northern New Mexicans. The writer makes the mistake of using the term, "Mexicans", but the story is interesting:
